Sir Keir not taking potential by-election win for granted. Wakefield was won by the Tories in the 2019 general election after being a Labour stronghold since the 1930s.
In the last 10 years there has been a very small growth in the population of Wakefield. The election is due to be held on 23 June. Wakefield was held by Labour for more than 87 years before the Conservatives took the seat in 2019 with a majority of 3358.
Wakefield and Tiverton and Honiton both Conservative-held have come under serious threat from Labour and the Liberal Democrats respectively. Defeat for the Tories would be laid firmly at the door of Boris Johnsons. The election will be held the same day as the Tiverton and Honiton by-election in.
Simon Lightwood becomes Labours newest MP after gaining 13166 votes compared to 8241. The Conservatives won Wakefield from Labour at the 2019 general election the first time the seat had elected a Tory since 1931. But a by-election was called after the resignation of Conservative Imran Ahmad Khan.
